Honoring Freedom. Celebrating Culture. Building Community.
The Juneteenth Flag Collective exists to advance Juneteenth awareness, cultural pride, and community investment through inclusive programming, education, and celebration in Newark and beyond.
Our Mission
We believe Juneteenth represents more than a historical moment—it's a living celebration of liberation, resilience, and the ongoing work of building an equitable, inclusive community. Our mission is to educate Newark residents about Juneteenth's profound significance, create accessible cultural programming that brings families and neighbors together, and raise proceeds to support causes that advance freedom and justice in our community.
Why We Do This
Too many young people and new residents don't know the full story of Juneteenth—the courage of formerly enslaved people claiming their freedom, the long journey to recognition, and the vibrant cultural traditions that grew from that liberation. We created the Juneteenth Flag Collective to change that. Through free and low-cost events, educational programming, live performances, and community gatherings, we're building a space where Newark celebrates Black culture, learns our shared history, and invests in each other.
Our Core Values
- Education: Making Juneteenth's history accessible, engaging, and relevant to all ages.
- Cultural Pride: Celebrating Black resilience, creativity, and community power.
- Community Investment: Raising proceeds and resources for causes that create real change.
- Inclusivity: Creating free, accessible programming that welcomes everyone—families, educators, donors, volunteers, and neighbors.
- Partnership: Working alongside Newark's schools, cultural institutions, city agencies, and community organizations to amplify impact.

Community Trust: Partnerships with respected institutions—museums, schools, city agencies—signal credibility and demonstrate that our work is valued by Newark's civic and cultural ecosystem.
Shared Resources: Co-sponsorships, in-kind donations, and shared venues reduce costs and allow more proceeds to reach cause recipients and community members directly.
